War Drums In The Middle East - Is War Between Israel, Hezbollah, And Syria Likely?

Is a war about to ignite between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon? If so, is it likely to involve Syria as well? According to Israeli security officials, Israel has placed its security forces on higher alert, beefed up security at diplomatic missions abroad and advised Israeli travelers to put off trips to Muslim states for fear Lebanese militants will carry out a revenge attack at the upcoming end of the mourning period for the assassinated arch-terrorist/military commander of Hezbollah Imad Mughaniyeh approached. Mughaniyeh, one of the world's most wanted men who was linked to a series of attacks that killed... ... more

Todays Change Of Pace - Ofra Haza. If Only Her Message Of Peace In the ME Were Heeded

As we learn today that Israeli troops have again moved into Gaza, exchanging fire with Palestinian militants, after explosions rocked the army post near the Kissufim crossing between Israel and the centre of the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, it seems like a good time to pull out an old post for today's "change of pace" and put up a piece on someone that has been said to have bridged the divide between Israel and Arab countries - and has been called the greatest singer in the last century! The move on the part of the Israelis is yet another attempt to... ... more

Annapolis: An Exercise In Futility?

While I see Annapolis as "a colossal waste of time," except for the fact that it pisses off Iran and Hamas, Jules Crittenden sees it as "a meaningful step toward peace in someone else's time" and believes that it might amount to something. I hope Jules is right and I'm wrong. My problem with Annapolis is that it can be successful only if the Palestinians, Syrians, Iranians, Hamas, and Hezbollah can ever get passed hating the "evil Jooozzz," and being committed to the destruction of Israel - and that will never happen. Or could it. There have been voices of... ... more

Israel 'last, best chance for the Islamic world to come to terms with the modern world'

B. Spengler's highly informative November 20 piece in Asia Times offers the compelling suggestion that despite what received wisdom in the foreign ministries of the West holds (and what the Muslim world would have us believe) - that relations with Muslims would be ever so much easier without the annoying presence of the Jewish state, which humiliates the Muslim world - the exact opposite is true. According to Spengler: "The state of Israel embodies the last, best chance for the Islamic world to come to terms with the modern world because it constitutes a humiliation": The premise of Western policy... ... more

Were Saddam's 'Missing' WMD's Targeted In The Israeli Strike In Syria ?

Was this a combination factory/WMD dump site where the Syrians were mixing imported North Korean plutonium with Saddam's enriched uranium? Could it be that the "somewhat reliable" Debkafile was accurate when they reported that the Syrians were importing North Korean plutonium to be mixed with Saddam's enriched uranium and that the Syrians were close to completing a warhead factory next to Saddam's WMD dump in Deir al Zour, Syria to produce hundreds, if not thousands, of super toxic "dirty bombs" that would pollute wherever they landed in Israel for the next several thousands of years ? Were the recent New... ... more

What Secret Israeli Raid On North Korean Shipment Of Nuclear Materials To Syria?

For days now anonymous US officials and officials of other countries have spoken of a mysterious Israeli strike inside Syria - with talk ranging from suggestions it was aimed at a shipment of weapons to Hizbollah from Iran, to suggestions Syria could be building a nuclear facility with North Korean help and the Israelis. The talk of a N. Korean/Syrian nuclear connection has not been without "fuel," with reports of leaked US intelligence citing alleged atomic links between the Stalinist state and Syria still coming out today (the Bush administration apparently prefers to pretend it isn't happening, in order to... ... more

Those Snakes Of Arabi Are No Friends Of Ours

In his piece Civic Duty at NRO today, Mark Stein refers to his column this week titled One Way Multiculturalism about the malign influence of bigshot Saudis, and then addresses an email he received from an MIT prof that derides America's dependence on oil and suggests that the way to beat the "Saudi Wahabbi trogs" is for the neocons to send their SUVs to the scrapyard and buy a civic. Israel Left With Few Options Other Than Plan Attack On Hamastan

Today's Times of London, quoting senior military sources, reports that Israel's new defense minister Ehud Barak is planning to attack Gaza with 20,000 troops to destroy much of Hamas's military capability in just days. Apparently, Barak has already demanded detailed plans to deploy two armored divisions and an infantry division, accompanied by assault drones and F-16 jets, against the Hamas. ... The raid would be triggered by Hamas rocket attacks against Israel or a resumption of suicide bombings. ... The Israeli forces would expect to be confronted by about 12,000 Hamas fighters with arms confiscated from the Fatah faction that... ... more

That Phoney Balony Unity Accord Didn't Last Long

A key issue of importance to Palestinians has been an accord on sharing power in a coalition government between Hamas and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. The deal supposedly brokered by Saudi diplomats Thursday was that Hamas would respect past peace deals with Israel. The Palestinians had hopes the unity deal reached in Mecca would end the economic embargo on the Hamas government, since the Palestinian's culture of violence, intolerance, and hate is so completely incapable of generating anything in the way of international commerce. The Palestinians need an international handout since they are little more than a group of... ... more
