Iranian Foreign Minister Calls On Muslims To 'Erase' Israel

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki called on the world's Muslims today to work to "erase" Israel, in the latest of a long string of verbal attacks by Tehran against the Jewish state. How is it that so many Muslims exist in a state of mind more appropriate for the middle ages than the modern world? But surely Israel isn't worried. After all, if the American people are so foolishly naive as to elect him, a president B. Hussein Obama will talk to the Iranian leaders and everything will be okay. Israel will not be "erased" or, as Almadinejad has promised,... ... more

IAEA to Iran: Explain 2004 Documents For Building Nukes

"Why (was the American intelligence community) so intent on dismissing the threat from Iran that they reversed three years of high-confidence assessments of an ongoing nuclear-weapons program to replace it with a moderate-confidence dismissal?"If you were among the gullible and naive liberals that believed the American intelligence community when it issued a national estimate that claimed with moderate confidence that the Iranians had ceased work on a nuclear bomb by 2003, you were indeed gullible and naive. The IAEA has documents which dispute the NIE, and call into question the motives behind its creation. Back when it first came out,... ... more

Turkish Ambassador to U.S. Calls Iran "a threat to Turkey as well as to the U.S." (Updated)

Andrew Cochran points out at Counterterrorism blog that anyone wondering whether the threat posed by Iran is "tiny" or substantial (is B. Hussein Obama listening?) should ponder what the Ambassador from Turkey to the U.S. said today at the panel on the Turkey-U.S. relationship. Ambassador Nahi Sensoy said that Iran has run "clandestine (nuclear) programs for more than two decades," and those programs are "a threat to Turkey as well as to the U.S." Granted, Turkey's method of dealing with that threat includes diplomatic engagement with Iran - the two have not been at war with each other since 1639... ... more

World Nightmare: Iran Could Have Nukes By Mid-2009

In what Robert Spencer refers to as a 1938 moment, Israel now fears Iran could have a nuclear bomb by mid-2009:(Jerusalem Post) With Iran racing forward with its nuclear program, Israel now believes the Islamic Republic will master centrifuge technology and be able to begin enriching uranium on a military scale this year, The Jerusalem Post has learned. The new assessment moves up Israel's forecasts on Teheran's nuclear program by almost a full year - from 2009 to the end of 2008. According to the new timeline, Iran could have a nuclear weapon by the middle of next year. Iran,... ... more

Iran changes dollar for euro or yen in Oil Exports

This is something Ahmadenijad had already announced some months ago, but now it's being formally announced: "All the oil operations are being made in euros or in yens" Hojjatollah Ghanimifard has explained. Ghanimifard is the director of foreign relations of the Iranian National Oil Company. Iran finishes this way its process of reducing its exposition to the dollar, after the tensions between Teheran and Wasington because of the nuclear crisis. In fact, last december an Iranian Government speaker informed already that 90% of the revenues obtained by the oil exports weren't made in dollars. Ahmadenijad said this was because the... ... more

A 'Perfect Storm': When ODNI's 'Walmart Approach' To Intelligence Gathering Is Combined With The NIE Authors' Political Agenda (Updated)

I had to think twice about which category to put this post under - "political news and commentary"or "Iran." I blame my confusion on an intelligence community that has trouble separating their own political views and agendas from the facts, while putting out half-truths in intelligence reports in order to influence foreign policy. After considerable consideration, I've decided on the more appropriate - "political news and commentaries." After all, it seems to me that we all ought to be asking if the misguided release of a half-truth NIE resulted from the actions of political hacks inside our intelligence community, from... ... more

Will Ahmadinejad's Claim Of 3,000 Centrifuges Trigger Israeli Strike ? (Updated)

Iran's announcement that it now has 3,000 centrifuges signals an ability to produce the nuclear material needed for a warhead. With Israel having destroyed Saddam Hussein's Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981, and having recently struck a suspected nuclear plant in Syria, there should be little doubt that "as the sole -- if undeclared -- nuclear power in the region," it will not tolerate a nuclear Iran that has said Israel should be "wiped off the map." So no wonder Washington is concerned about a possible (if not likely) strike on Iran by Israel: A claim by President Ahmadinejad that Iran... ... more

Kurdish Opposition in Iran

Domestic opposition to the central government in Tehran is known to be widespread, but has been difficult to substantiate and quantify because of the severe restraints on free public expression in Iran. Kurdish opposition to the IRI in Western Iran has always been much more pronounced and has been violently targeted for years, most notably in the Mykonos killings in Germany in 1992, in the Vienna assassinations in 1989 and in recent border clashes with Iranian Kurds in Iraq, which are now seen as a key element in rising tensions between Iran and the US. As Douglas Farah notes today at FSM, yesterday's Washington Post brought the welcome news that the Bush administration is about to designate Iran's Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist entity. As Farah points out in his piece, the al Quds Force doesn't always operate with the full knowledge and consent of the central government, nor do its leaders appear to be accountable to either the central command of the Revolutionary Guard or the civilian government. Talks In Baghdad: US GetsNothing While Iran Gains

Apparently, we have invited the Iranians to join us and the Iraqis on a 'security committee' for the future of Iraq. This, after US ambassador Ryan Crocker met with the Iranians, and genuflected: We got nothing--except for those who are addicted to talks, any talks, at whatever cost--while Iran got a success because we have now brought them into some sort of security body for Iraq. Just what we needed. Just when we are winning the war, arresting Iranians daily, and destroying their Sunni and Shi'ite proxies, the appeasement lobby snatches a new defeat from victory's jaws. Admiral Sir Alan West, former First Sea Lord of the Royal Navy, says that it's completely outrageous for any nation to go out and arrest the servicemen of another nation in waters that don't belong to them. However, as Victor Davis Hanson notes at NRO, if the attack was "outrageous," it was apparently not quite outrageous enough for anything to have been done about it yet. The problem lies in the fact that Europe, and the West as a whole, have evolved beyond a need for war in dealing with logical nations. However, Iran is a country so wretched as... ... more

Tehran's Hostage Gambit

In a New York Post article today Amir Taheri tells us that border incidents such as the one where Iranian guardsmen recently captured 15 British sailors are common in the Shatt al-Arab waterway, but rarely lead to any action being taken by either Iraq or Iran when a vessel crosses what is a disputed territorial marker. Taheri and many others believe this event was deliberately orchestrated by Tehran to give it leverage to solve other problems. As Taheri puts it, "when in doubt, take hostages." He notes that Iran has been involved in the taking of at least 1,000 hostages... ... more

Iranian General That Defected Was Spy For West

It sounds almost like a spy novel, and maybe too much so. On the other hand, if the Times of London version of the story is true, it makes the mullahs look like bungling fools and the West has indeed got a wealth of much needed information on Iran's terror ties. Brigadier General Ali Reza Asgari, 63, Iran's former deputy defence minister who defected to the West last month, apparently (and I do mean "apparently") had been spying on Iran since 2003 when he supposedly had been recruited on an overseas business trip. Asgari, 63, served in the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, and held a senior position in the Guards' branch in Lebanon from the 1990s. There Are 'Good' Reasons For Talks With Iran And Syria?

Dan Riehl notes that Jules Crittenden and some others seem skeptical of potential talks with Iran and Syria, and although he's a hawk, he believes it makes sense to talk to Iran for some very specific reasons. While I agree with most of Dan's reasons for 'giving talk a chance', there is the very real danger that our side might actually believe what Iran says or promises. Given Iran's more than 20 year history of deceit and lies, there is absolutely nothing that Iran could say or promise that can be believed or trusted. Toss in the fact that Iran's... ... more

This diversion of public attention paid off when the Security Council's decision of 31 July, 2006 - that demands Iran suspend its enrichment activities - did not receive media coverage corresponding to its importance. However, Iran is not the only one profiting from the absence of public focus on its... ... more

Iran begins war games, ahead of August 22

Is Iran's President Ahmadinejad making plans for August 22, or just  'getting "ready to thwart" all "plots" against the Islamic Republic' because they believe 'no army in the world could match Iran's regular armed forces, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) and its affiliated organs'.  The war games begin this weekend, but Iran has made sure everyone understands that they have no date set to end these maneuvers.AKI reports that Teheran is to begin, on Saturday, a series of missile launch tests ... The missiles being launched from border provinces is designed to maxmize the range. If they were launched... ... more

Ahmadinejad on '60 Minutes'

I didn't watch all of the '60 Minutes' interview with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for various reasons, namely because Mike Wallace refused to actually ask tough questions and seemingly threw fastballs to a fastball hitter. But the point in the interview that I turned it off was when Wallace stated to Ahmadinejad that Bush was the commander in chief of the "so-called" free world. Wallace put the ball on the tee with that one. Kash, an Iranian expatriot, did watch it though and has some great commentary. One particular response from Kash is as follows:... ... more

Wallace's Bizarre Fascination with Ahmadinejad

Retired CBS veteran correspondent Mike (60 minutes) Wallace scored an exclusive interview with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and has apparently given the dictator another stage to pontificate on the evils of America and demand the world's submission to Islamic intimidation. Speaking about President Bush's failure to answer his 18-page letter that criticized U.S. foreign policy, Ahmadinejad suggests we embrace Dhimmitude: Well, (with the letter) I wanted to open a window towards the light for the president so that he can see that one can look on the world through a different perspective. ... We are all free to choose. But... ... more

What About That 1953 CIA Iranian Coup?

In a comment on one of my blogs, Mahathir Fan says: I stated that the last time the United States government overthrew an Iranian government, back in 1953, it destroyed a democracy and instituted a dictatorship. Instead of removing the chains of tyranny from the Iranian people, it helped to put them on, and helped keep them on for the 26 years that the Shah remained in power. Therefore, it would be impossible for the Iranian people to believe that any American intervention could lead to their freedom. There is no doubt that in 1953 the CIA engineered a coup... ... more

Ahmadinejad 'Weighing Proposal' Or 'Iran Buying Time While Secretly Developing A Nuclear Bomb'

Why am I not surprised that the first story on Iran I see this morning is the WaPo article on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad statement Friday that an international proposal designed to restart negotiations on Iran's nuclear program constitutes "a step forward" and his government will respond "in due time" ? As is tpical for the WaPo and the majority of the MSM, their Islamo-appeasing title is "Iran leader weighing proposal," as if we are to await with bated breath Ahmadinejad's serious consideration of a proposal that he is, with one hundred percent certainty, going to reject. Translated from 'Iranianese'... ... more

Enriched Uranium Found in Iran

Hat Tip Bretibart.com and Newsmax The UN Atomic agency seems to have found weapons-grade Uranium in Iran. Furthermore, the site where the Uranium was found is linked to the Defense ministry. While Uranium only needs to be slightly enriched for energy production, weapons-grade Uranium must be enriched to contain very high (90%) of the heavier isotope of Uranium. This large disparity between weapons-grade and energy-grade Uranium should make it clear that this is not meant for civilian use. These findings are in sharp contradiction to the rhetoric that tyrant President Ahmedinejad has been spouting. "The Islamic republic denies accusations it... ... more

Analyzing Ahmadinejad's Admonitions

I have had time to read and analyze the letter from Iran's President Ahmadinejad and my conclusion? He has basically said, 'abandon democracy and join the [Islamic] religious revival', ... or else. President George W. Bush was right to dismiss this letter as a move by Tehran to divert attention from the nuclear issue. To give any public value to this letter would be a mistake. However, behind the scenes our govenment should be taking this 18 page rambling letter very seriously. Ahmadinejad recounts all the supposed "sins" of the American government and calls on President Bush to abandon democracy... ... more

Moving Towards Sanctions

Diplomacy. Sanctions. Military action. These are the three steps that the international community will be required to take against Iran, if Ahmadinejad does not stop the race towards political suicide. As diplomacy has already failed, sanctions will be soon imposed on the Iranian regime before the last and final step. We are going to discuss here the social, political and economical implications of such a measure. If the United Nations Security Council imposes sanctions on Iran, domestic support for Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad will wane, according to ALEX VATANKA, Eurasia editor for Jane's Information Group. Iran, who to blame and what action to take?

While we all try to figure out what to do about Iran, the blame game begins.  Who is at fault for allowing Iran to get this far with their nuclear program?  Tsotne Bakuria in The Washington Times puts the blame on Russia.  Others blame Bill Clinton.  Blame really doesn't do us any good now, it is ACTION that is needed:After all, it was the former Soviet Union who is responsible. Today, Russia's reluctance to seriously condemn Iran or threaten the country with economic sanctions is a critical mistake, and one that will surely end in catastrophe. Russia has been the... ... more
