Militant Attacks 'Surging' In Afghanistan

The NYT reports that attacks by 'militants' (read - radical Islamic terrorists) crossing into Afghanistan from Pakistan have apparently tripled since September along portions of the border, prompting calls for a greater effort by Pakistan to curb the influx and a larger deployment of American and other NATO soldiers there. A military commander says the "enemy is using both sides of the border" and that even after five years of pressing the Pakistani government to shut down Taliban infiltration, "there is no easy solution to the problem" (read - the Pakistani government is giving the Taliban a free border crossing pass while giving the West lip service)

However, on the plus side, and hopefully something a bit beyond lip service, Forward Movement points to Pakistan's whacking of al-Qaeda on the Afghan border - taking out several terrorist compounds. In other good news, late last night, the United States military announced two Afghan civilians, a guard and a translater, stopped a suicide car bomb attack on a U.S. base. It's always nice to have a little help from our friends - and almost as nice to know that we have some to give us some help. It would be nice to be getting more of the same in Iraq where FP reports a gruesome two-bomb car and suicide combo attack that killed more than 70 students at a university in Baghdad.

The BBC's Mike Wooldridge in Baghdad says the bombers apparently attacked at the front and rear entrances of the university building, catching many of the students as they emerged.

A car bomb exploded followed by a suicide bomber who blew himself up among people fleeing the first blast in the predominantly Shia area, police said.

Pictures from the campus showed a scene of devastation, with wrecked and blackened vehicles scattered across a wide area.

"The majority of those killed are female students who were on their way home," Reuters news agency quoted a university official as saying.

"There's glass everywhere and the doors were blown out," the official said.

Police said 170 people were wounded in the blasts, the worst single attacks in the capital this year.

Blame this one on the Sunni insurgents. The Shi'ite students surely didn't deserve being murdered, however, Iran and their Shi'ite-owned government are doing a hell of a lot of the killing, doing their part to perpetuate the senseless violence.

Since the murders were most certainly done in the name of Allah, we can assume that the murdering radical Islamist bastards that killed the students thought they were going to be rewarded with the customary allocation of 72 virgins. Instead, surely they will rot in hell. This Muslim on Muslim violence makes even less sense than Muslim on non-Muslim violence, which itself make no sense.
