At War With Iran
As all but the most clueless among us knows, Iran has been at war with the U.S. since 1979. Today, in his informative piece, "Iran Wants War," Jules Crittenden raises the ultimate question: If the value of the blood and treasure we are expending in Iraq and our vital national interests there are not now evident, just what is it going to take?
Skeptics, please note that Iran also wants a nuclear weapon. As stated here earlier, U.S. naval and land forces appear to be moving into position that could destory much of Iran's WMD development capability and air defenses, while defending Iraq and our forces there from a flanking attack by Iran's proxies (see above).As Jules points out, the key issue is the question of will. We have the ability to "to bring something approaching peace and stability to Iraq, if we have the will." We can let Iran defeat us in Iraq - as they are doing, without even fighting us, or we can win - again, it's a matter of our will:There are some people who are of the opinion this is our own doing, because we invaded Iraq. That position ignores the fact that Saddam had corrupted the sanctions regime and was awaiting its imminent collapse to resume his WMD programs. It ignores the fact that the Iranian nuclear program was already underway. It would have been a race to see who gets there first.
Just as we have the ability to bring something approaching peace and stability to Iraq, a nation that was doomed to tear itself apart violently on sectarian lines, just as it is doing now, with Iranian meddling, in our absence. With our presence, we can keep it a controlled burn and even begin to stamp it out. If we have the will.
As we asked in a June 30, 2006 post, "Is there any wonder why Iran believes that it can continue unimpeded and immune from repercussions from its actions - given its long history of lies, deception, cheat, and attacks against the U.S., all while we have done nothing more than sat back and take it?

Iran and the world's leading industrialized democracies staked out conflicting positions Thursday on when Tehran should respond to a U.N. proposal concerning the country's nuclear program.Again, as we and others continue to ask: When is the American public going to stand up and say enough is enough? Attack Iran vis a vis Iraq...ha! If we really had enough cajones we would be bombing even bigger and riskier foes, China and Russia. After all, the war with China really never ended in Korea. These countries are much more target rich, employ much heavier weapons, are just as foreign and hard to understand as the Iranians and contain a heck of a lot more people. and with the exception of a few, these countries have more non-Christians. Don't think we have enough troops? Ha! We could recruit from the third world with the promist of passports and or pay Americans double what they pay contractor in a month in Iraq. Worried about anti-Amiercan backlash? Not to worry, China holds a large percentage of the world populous that would surely die anyways. Onward soldiers...onward you fake conservatives and sissy liberals...onward!

Though I agree with your assessment, I do think that attacking Iran would be quite an interesting study in 'shaking the global ant farm'. I mean, I would love to see the Saudi royals fall and finally get their's for their logistical support and financing of the 9-11 hijackers by a populous that is already fed up with them anyways. It would also be interesting to see quite Western forms of governments in Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, EAU, Dubai fall in the hands of soon to be radicals. I never liked Musharif's mustache and would like to see what the Islamic bomb can really do. It would also be fun to see the Frenchees, Krauts, Spanishees and other EU countries fall to their knees from radical Islamic youth gone mad (might give us a good reason to invade Europe all over again.) Also, we'll be able to see if Iran's scuds could actually work and hit Isreal, Iraq bases and other forward targets or if Russian technology is really a bunch of crap. Think of the record profits Wall Street will have by then (licking my lips already). Let's bomb Iran first before we we aim for all of Eurasia.

C'mon guys, you're letting your politics get in the way of common sense. The Islamic Republic of Iran is a true threat, both to the region and the West. This is not to say that the Arab countries have clean hands, but first things first.
As for James' little politicized rant, he certainly has the right to offer his opinions, however misguided they may be.
