Mati-ur Rehman mastermind of UK terror plan
Mati-ur Rehman is being named as the probable mastermind behind the British passenger jet bomb plot. He is known 'as al-Qaeda's planning director, a shadowy figure known as the Keeper of the Directory of Jihad, a log book containing the names of recruits who attended al-Qaeda training camps in Afghanistan in the 1990s.'
A major Pakistani newspaper reported two weeks ago that Mati-ur Rehman was arrested in remote South Waziristan, a lawless part of Pakistan close to Afghanistan, largely beyond the control of central government. ...
Inquiries by the ABC in Pakistan suggest that in June the authorities arrested the leader of the terrorist group that abducted and beheaded the American journalist Daniel Pearl.
It's understood that after the man named Usman Kurd was picked up by police in the teeming southern port city of Karachi, he confessed to the activities of his co-conspirators now under arrest in Britain.
Neither man, Usman Kurd or Mati-ur Rehman, is a household name, but in the days to come they may become more publicly identified with the so called 'terror spectacular' that's just been foiled in Britain.
In New Delhi, this is Peter Lloyd reporting for Saturday AM.
