Help Save A Man's Life: Yemen editor faces capital punishment for printing cartoons. (Updated)
Up to 21 prosecution lawyers called for the death penalty against Mohammed Al-Asadi, the Editor-in-Chief of the Yemen Observer, and the permanent closure of the newspaper, during Al-Asadi’s trial on Wednesday. As incredible as it sounds, nonetheless, the lawyers, commissioned by Sheik Abdul-Majid Zindani, the Chairman of Islah Shura Council and led by Mohammed Al-Shawish, also called for the confiscation of all the newspaper’s property and assets, and for financial compensation to be paid to be the Muslim’s ‘Finance House’, which last existed during the time of the Caliphs, 1200 years ago.
This reminds us of the words of Wafa Sultan: (We are dealing) with a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality. It is a clash between freedom and oppression, between democracy and dictatorship. It is a clash between human rights, on the one hand, and the violation of these rights, on other hand.
Poul Højlund, at PIA CAUSA, is urging that bloggers and readers CALL ALL PAPERS AND POLITICIANS TO GO AGAINST THIS DEFAMATION OF MANKIND. Help save the life of a man who is about to be executed by Islamists because he believes in freedom.
Also. read the "must read" interview with Al-Asadi, ‘Of Course I’m Afraid’: In an interview from his jail cell, a Yemeni editor imprisoned over the Prophet Muhammad cartoons discusses press freedom, religion and calls for his execution.
Bloggers are encouraged to get this distributed throughout the world.
