Barack Obama is in Iowa using taxpayer money to, well, drive the price of meat up to consumers ... in order to buy the votes of meat producers:
President Barack Obama, campaigning in Iowa today, announced $170 million in government meat purchases to help farmers struck by drought, helping to send hog prices to a one-week high.
of as much as $100 million of pork, $50 million of chicken, and $10 million each of lamb and catfish come on top of $30 million in assistance announced last week. Farmers and ranchers are struggling with the worst combination of heat and dryness since the 1950s, the administration said.
Obama said he also directed the Defense Department to speed up purchases and hold the meat for later use. The buying will help farmers, and the government will get a better price on products than if they were bought later, he said.Obama 'don't need no stinkin' law of supply and demand' to tell him what this will do to poor folks' ability to purchase meat for their family's tables ... he's the prez ... and couldn't care less ... for him it's the votes that matter. And what the hell, it's not his effing money he's spending, right? It's ours!
As for what would really help the hog and chicken farmers and cattle ranchers ... reversing the U.S. mandate to use 40 percent of this year's corn crop to produce ethanol that threatens their livelihood (and that they've been begging to have reversed), that would take too much common sense, and because he thinks the enviro-crazies in his base will get their panties all in a wad, he won't even consider it.
Simply put, the government is driving up the cost of food, animal feed and gasoline, and Obama's solution is to drive up meat prices as well. Obama could eliminate the entire problem overnight and reduce carbon emissions were he to waive the ethanol mandate in a time of drought. Instead, he is creating a new spending program to mollify livestock producers, who, were it not for the ethanol mandate, would be able to make an honest living without his ... or the taxpayers' help. Even environmentalists rejected ethanol long ago, when scientists established that it actually increases carbon and smog emissions. But Barack Obama is too clueless and/or uninformed, to take this fact into account before knee-jerking to a position that he thinks will buy votes.
